Why Your Rain Gear Is Wetting Out, and How to Fix It
Few things are more annoying than pulling on a rain jacket, heading out, and watching the fabric soak up water instead of shedding it. The jacket darkens. Rain spreads instead of beading. It feels heavy, cold and clammy fast.
Good news: this does not always mean your jacket has failed. Often it just needs cleaning, reproofing, or both.
What Does Wetting Out Actually Mean?
A good rain jacket is built so water beads on the surface and rolls away, thanks to the repellent finish on the outer fabric. This is often called DWR, which stands for durable water repellent.
Dirt, sweat, oils, abrasion and general wear can erode that finish over time. Once it stops working, water spreads across the fabric instead of beading off. That is wetting out.
It is not the same as the jacket leaking through its waterproof membrane. The membrane can be fine, but once the outer layer saturates, the jacket stops feeling comfortable regardless.
Why a Wetted-Out Jacket Feels So Cold
Two things are happening at once. A saturated outer fabric holds cold water against the jacket, making the whole thing feel colder. Breathability also drops when the outer layer is soaked, so moisture from your body struggles to escape and builds up inside instead.
That damp, clammy feeling often gets mistaken for a leak, and sometimes it actually is, but usually, it is wetting out plus reduced breathability. Either way, it feels miserable.
If the outer fabric of a breathable waterproof garment absorbs water, the garment can lose a significant amount of breathability. That is why keeping the DWR working matters for comfort, not just for keeping rain off the surface.
Why Rain Jackets Start Wetting Out
Rain jackets earn their keep, dealing with rain, mud, sweat, sunscreen, pack straps and being shoved damp into a pack. Common causes of wetting out include dirt and grime, detergent residue from general washing, body oils around the collar and cuffs, abrasion from straps, smoke from cooking and campfires, and a worn-down water repellent finish.
Shoulders, cuffs, elbows and the front of the jacket show problems first because they take the most wear. If your jacket wets out mainly where your pack sits, that is normal abrasion, not something you have done wrong. It just means the jacket needs care.
Step One: Clean It Properly
Cleaning comes first, always. A dirty jacket cannot perform well, and just as you wouldn’t paint over a dirty fence, reproofing over unclean gear is a waste of time and money. Wash it with a specialist cleaner like Tech Wash, rather than a general detergent, which can leave behind residue that interferes with performance.
Nikwax technical cleaners are built for waterproof and technical gear. They are formulated to clear dirt, sweat and residue while helping revive water repellency and breathability at the same time.
For machine washing, remove detergent build-up from the dispenser first, wash a maximum of two garments at a time, and follow the garment care label. Nikwax’s own instructions recommend a 30°C synthetic cycle on a slow spin for Tech Wash, using 100 ml in soft water areas or 150 ml in medium to hard water areas.
Once washed, if you know the gear needs proofing next, there is no need to wait to dry. You can go right ahead and waterproof when wet.
If you are unsure, dry the jacket according to the care label, then test it. Sprinkle water on the outer fabric. If it beads and rolls off, cleaning did the job. If it soaks in or spreads, it is time to reproof.
Step Two: Reproof It
Waterproofing restores the water-repellent finish on the outer fabric. A technical re-proofer like Nikwax TX.Direct adds DWR, helps reduce water absorption and revives breathability, so water can bead and roll off again instead of saturating the fabric.
Some Nikwax waterproofing products come in wash-in and spray-on options. Wash-in suits the whole garment. Spray-on targets high-wear spots like shoulders, elbows, cuffs and the front of the jacket, and is handy for avoiding areas with wicking linings or mixed construction that do not need treatment. Check the care label if unsure.
For wash-in waterproofing, we recommend cleaning first in a separate wash cycle. For front-loading machines, use a maximum of two clean garments and 100 ml of waterproofing per garment. For hand washing, use 100 ml for one clean garment in 7.5 litres of warm water, then rinse until the water runs clear.
Step Three: Check for Real Damage
If a properly cleaned and reproofed jacket still leaks, washing may not be the fix. Look for peeling seam tape, worn or delaminating fabric, pinholes, damaged zips or torn pockets where the membrane looks compromised.
Small holes, failing zips or damaged seams are often repairable, but a breaking-down membrane or heavily worn fabric means the jacket may sadly be near the end of its life.
Either way, do not jump to replacement before cleaning and reproofing. Plenty of "dead" jackets are just dirty or overdue for care.
How Often Should You Wash or Reproof?
No fixed schedule suits every jacket. It depends on how the jacket is used, how often it gets dirty, and whether the DWR is still working.
A jacket worn occasionally around town needs far less attention than one used for intense multi-day tramping, hunting, farming or wet winter sports. As a practical rule, wash when it looks dirty, smells stale, feels clammy, has been exposed to sweat or sunscreen, or stops breathing well.
After washing, always do the water test. If water beads and rolls away, you may not need to reproof. If water still spreads or soaks into the outer fabric after cleaning, reproof with the correct product for the gear.
If you use your jacket hard through winter, check the beading before spring trips start, so problems get sorted before the weather turns.
Make It Last Longer
Do not store it wet or dirty. Dry it properly before putting it away for more than a day or two. Use a technical cleaner, not a generic supermarket detergent, and clean before you reproof.
Pay attention to high-wear spots like shoulders, cuffs and elbows, follow the care label on washing and drying, and reproof as soon as water stops beading after a proper clean, not months later.
Wetting Out Is a Warning, Not Always a Failure
A wetted-out jacket is telling you something. It might be dirty, need reproofing, have worn areas, or, in some cases, need some repair.
Start with a technical cleaner, test for beading, reproof if needed, then check for further damage if the problem persists.
Before you give up on a rain jacket, give it the right care first. The difference between soaked and miserable, or dry and comfortable, might just be a proper wash and reproof.
